Singer/songwriter Lorde is on track for her first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart, according to industry forecasters. Sources suggest that her new album, Melodrama , may launch at No. 1 with perhaps 80,000 to 90,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending June 22. The set, which is Lorde’s second studio effort, was released on June 16 through Lava/Republic Records. The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The top 10 of the new July 8-dated Billboard 200 chart (where Lorde will debut) is scheduled to be revealed on Billboard’s websites on Sunday, June 25. Melodrama follows the New Zealand artist's debut effort, Pure Heroine , which debuted and peaked at No. 3 with 129,000 copies sold in its first week, according to Nielsen Music. The week’s second biggest new entry will likel...

Tiger Woods says he is ‘receiving professional help to manage my medications’

Tiger Woods, shown in February, has played only twice this year. He was arrested for driving under the influence last month. (Kamran Jebreili/Associated Press) Three weeks after he was arrested for driving under the influence, Tiger Woods said Monday night that he is seeking help for the way he handles medication for his chronic back problems and for a lifelong sleeping disorder, a striking admission from the 14-time major champion golfer in the week before he is due to host his Washington-area PGA Tour stop. “I’m currently receiving professional help to manage my medications and the ways that I deal with back pain and a sleep disorder,” Woods said in a statement Monday. “I want to thank everybody for the amazing outpouring of support and understanding especially the fans and players on tour.” Woods, 41, has only played twice this year — missing one cut and withdrawing once. He underwent his fourth back surgery in April. His arrest came in the e...

Otto Warmbier, Student Released from North Korea, Dies

Image
Otto Warmbier, an American college student who was detained in North Korea for 17 months, died Monday, just six days after he was returned to his family in Ohio. He was 22. Warmbier's family issued a statement immediately following his death, blaming North Koreans for the poor physical and mental condition Warmbier was in when he arrived back in the States. "When Otto returned to Cincinnati late on June 13th he was unable to speak, unable to see and unable to react to verbal commands," the statement reads. "He looked very uncomfortable – almost anguished. Although we would never hear his voice again, within a day the countenance of his face changed – he was at peace. He was home and we believe he could sense that." The University of Virginia student was charged with committing a "hostile act" against North Korea in March 2016, two months after he allegedly attempted to steal a propaganda poster from the hotel where he was staying. (He was visiting...

A few days after Oklahoma announced its internal discipline for Baker Mayfield, the quarterback’s fate from the court system has become public. According to multiple outlets, Mayfield, who was arrested Feb. 25 for disorderly conduct, public intoxication, fleeing and resisting arrest, reached a plea deal last week in Fayetteville, Arkansas, district court. The resisting arrest charge was dropped and Mayfield will pay fines, including court costs, for the other charges, all of which are misdemeanors. From The Norman Transcript: Mayfield was fined $100 apiece for charges of public intoxication, disorderly conduct and fleeing. Peter King on Randy Moss, NFL Equality, Commencement

Image
My last column before three Mondays off—you will love the substitutes, so come back on June 26, July 3 and July 10 for great prose and information. Today is a surprising hodgepodge, followed by my annual section of commencement speeches from campuses around the country. (Theo Epstein had a gem at Yale.) Enjoy the column. * * * The Greatest Thing I Saw This Week Photo: Tom West/Minnesota Vikings Longtime Vikings writer Sid Hartman interviewed Randy Moss, who will be inducted into the team’s Ring of Honor this fall. Look at this photo. Tom West, the longtime Vikings PR man, took it the other day in fellow PR man Bob Hagan’s office at the Vikings’ headquarters in Eden Prairie, Minn. It’s beautiful. Sid Hartman, 97, the longtime Minnesota columnist and radio host who is still working every week, is on the left, interviewing Randy Moss, 40, who was in town to be told his number was being retired and he would be ensh...
