This week's free music download comes from Gracie and Rachel, in the form of their Tiptoe EP, a four-track collection that's offered as a sign of thanks from the duo as they prepare to release their debut self-titled album in April. The album, which you can pre-order via Pledgemusic, has been generating quite a buzz amongst folk fans and initiated audiences who have followed the artists as they've built a reputation for live shows and shrewd songwriting.
Comparisons to bands like The Staves have already been made. It's a blessing and a curse to be regarded in such high esteem as a band who have been championed by Bon Iver. But as Justin Vernon seems to do all he can to install a sense of folk-based purity back into the broader pop-listening consciousness, so the likes of The Staves and Gracie and Rachel will hopefully gain. What the Staves accomplish with three voices, Gracie and Rachel accomplish with their two part harmonies and an approach to craft that shows why those similarities should be celebrated.
There's a cover version here. Kreayshawn's "Gucci Gucci" gets a reworking, and delivers a clear indication of the approach Gracie and Rachel adopt. An originally scathing lyric is metered out with such beautiful precision that the result is more swag than anything you've heard before.
An accapella harmony and the story of promise as the narrator promises that they'll deliver whatever it is that you need, is a complex emotional space. There's a kind of innocence, but also this is a dealer speaking, and this isn't just love, or wholesome love on offer. This stuff is darker than first impressions would lead you to believe.
Title track "Tiptoe" has some of the best arranged string work you'll hear on a folk release this year. There's work here, but not over-work, which is the pothole that so many debut artists trip into. Gracie and Rachel have the good sense to know the song is good, and to dress it appropriately. Understatement, actually, is key to almost the entirety of this release, and it bodes well for the upcoming album.
The Tiptoe EP, is a beautiful little collection, and it serves more than being a simple pre-roll out teaser. These songs clearly contain the authority that the duo needs to draw listeners further along the path — away from noise and into what they're doing in their quiet corner.
