Alanis Morissette has announced a new stage musical based around her 1995 breakout album Jagged Little Pill.
Written by Diablo Cody (Juno) and headed by Tony Award-winning director Diane Paulus, the stage production will feature songs from the album, as well as deeper cuts from the singer's discography.
Speaking about the project Morissette said: "This team that has come together for this Jagged Little Pill musical is my musical theater dream come true. The chemistry between all of us is crackling and I feel honored to be diving into these songs again, surrounded by all of this searing talent. Diablo and Diane are already taking these deeply personal songs that are part of my soul's marrow to a whole other level of hope, freedom and complexity."
The musical has been in development since 2013, and is set to debut at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, MA, in May of 2018.
In 1995 Jagged Little Pill was a formative album for many teenagers and a cathartic sing-along soundtrack for many adults at the time. Hits like "You Oughta Know," "Ironic" and "Hand In My Pocket" continue to be benchmark tracks for Morissette, and continue in heavy radio rotation around the world.
Feminist perspectives, heartbreak, inner-strength and dark wit seem timeless, and will surely offer opportunities for communal singing in just twelve months.
