Justin Timberlake To Play Super Bowl Halftime Show 14 Years After Nipplegate -

In a short skit with Jimmy Fallon posted to Twitter Sunday night, Justin Timberlake announced he will be performing in the halftime show of this coming Super Bowl, officially known as the Pepsi Halftime Show at Super Bowl LII. Of course, no mention of the announcement can be considered complete without mentioning the events that occurred at the tail end of the Super Bowl XXXVII show, when Timberlake finished his dance number by revealing the breast of fellow performer Janet Jackson while singing the final line, "Gonna have you naked by the end of this song."

The cultural and legal repercussions of the 9/16th's of a second when Jackson's breast and a sun-shaped nipple decoration were revealed to the world cannot be understated. The FCC immediately slapped CBS with a $550,000 fine following complaints by an alleged 540,000 viewers. The NFL blames MTV, while CBS and Viacom blacklisted Janet Jackson across their wide range of communications networks. Technologically pioneering internet provider AOL decides not to broadcast the event online.

A PayPal programmer struggles to find the video clip of Timberlake pulling off the breast-piece online, so he creates a video-sharing website that eventually becomes YouTube. The FCC increases preventative measures like video delays, while Tivo and DVR's become household necessities.

Comedians the world 'round filled their cannons with Nipplegate-related fodder, Janet as Jackson hosts SNL and pokes fun at the incident and Letterman dedicates an entire monologue to the gaffe. Meanwhile, the $550,000 fine is contested all the way up to the Supreme Court. Strangely, Timberlake is rarely mentioned or blamed for the act.

No supporting acts for this year's halftime show have been announced as of yet, though the last few years have all featured collaborations between artists like Coldplay, Lady Gaga, Madonna, MIA, and Bruno Mars. (MIA herself started a mini-controversy in Super Bowl XLVI when she appeared to raise her middle finger to fans in the stadium and those watching at home.)

Timberlake and his upcoming performance have faced a strong backlash since Sunday's announcement, including accusations of institutional sexism white privilege because Jackson hasn't been asked to perform, as well as continued references to his appropriation of music and style considered to belong to black culture and artists.
