Blow by blow, how Alabama beat Ole Miss 66-3

Alabama-Ole Miss had become a series of shootouts. They'd trade licks for four hours before someone lost. It continued again Saturday for half of the equation. Alabama slapped Ole Miss around with a little bit of everything before settling on a 66-3 final. This came after the Rebels outscored the Tide 86-85 in two meetings when things were much different for this Ole Miss program. Alabama did it with some big plays through the air with Jalen Hurts adding a few new passes to his tool bag. He finished 12-for-19 for 197 passing yards while the Tide defense locked down the Rebel's fast-paced offense when needed. First quarter This started in classic Ole Miss-Alabama fashion. It looked like it would last all night and into the morning when the first three possessions took just 2:35 off the clock. Trading punts early, Jalen Hurts sparked things with a big third-down scramble to set up Bo Scarbrough's walk-in touchdown. Things stayed on script with a turnover-to-touchdown moment ...

Miley Cyrus, Shania Twain, And Demi Lovato Are Visions In Top Albums Of The Week

Image
Thu, 28 Sep 2017 16:13:17 September's final day of album releases is all about awesome, butt-kicking women. For some artists, this week was a return to their roots, while others ended lengthy hiatuses, and still others just added another stellar album to their name. Miley Cyrus may have experienced some changes in recent years, but it seems she has happily turned back to her roots on her new record, Younger Now . Shania Twain, meanwhile, ended her extended absence from the music scene. Demi Lovato released her sixth album, and it's bound to once again edge her towards the top of the charts. Wolf Alice is back with their sophomore LP, likely to add a number of Americans to their already huge UK fan base. So without further ado, here are ARTISTdirect's top albums of the week: Miley Cyrus — Younger Now Only two years past Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz , the life of Miley couldn't sound more different today. She's moved away from her psychedelic, rebel-pop ways ...

Chelsea Gray, Odyssey Sims put Los Angeles Sparks on verge of repeat in WNBA Finals

Image
3:11 AM ET Mechelle Voepel espnW.com Close ESPN.com women's basketball/college sports writer 33 seasons covering women's college basketball Covered 24 Final Fours LOS ANGELES -- For a lot of years, the Los Angeles Sparks couldn't quite solve their backcourt equation. They won back-to-back WNBA titles in 2001-02, lost in the WNBA Finals in 2003, and then didn't return to the championship series until last year. In the 13-year gap between Finals appearances, the Sparks had good talent, including at guard. But the exact right combination on the perimeter seemed to elude them, and that cost Los Angeles a chance to compete for a championship more than once. Now, though, the Sparks seem to have found it in consecutive years. That, combined with two exceptionally talented posts in Candace Parker and Nneka Ogwumike, has the Sparks on the verge of another repeat. Los Angeles won Game 3 75-64 over Minnesota at Staples Center on Friday to take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five series...

Miley Cyrus Packs Out Honky-Tonk for Release of New Album

Image
Miley Cyrus returned to her Tennessee roots, musically and geographically, for the release of her new album Younger Now with a hometown performance at Nashville honky-tonk. Cyrus answered questions from her fans and chatted with her dad, country singer Billy Ray Cyrus, during Friday night’s (Sept. 29) welcome home party thrown by the streaming service Spotify. She then performed a short set of her new songs during the appearance at Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge. As an artist who constantly reinvents her persona, Cyrus declares on the title track that, “No one stays the same.” On this new record, she’s more serene than shocking, with more twangy pop melodies than dance hits. Fans camped outside the bar for hours hoping to see the singer, who grew up in Nashville before becoming a teen television star in the Disney Channel program “Hannah Montana.” Her career transition provided plenty of provoking moments as she embraced her sexuality and sought to di...

USC simply didn't deserve a victory at Washington State

The public address announcer’s warnings to stay off the field at Martin Stadium were totally and happily ignored. Fans jumped over fences to stream down from the stands, cheering, chanting and smiling as they gathered at midfield Friday night in a huge pulsing crowd of crimson to celebrate the Cougars’ 30-27 upset of USC and the home team’s coming of age as a giant killer. “There’s a lot of people,” Washington State coach Mike Leach marveled during an on-field TV interview. “It’s like Woodstock, except everybody has their clothes on.” While fans savored the joys of peace, love and the Cougars’ first upset of a top-five team since the 2003 Holiday Bowl, USC senior safety Chris Hawkins cried inside the Trojans’ locker room. “It hurt,” he said. “We haven’t felt this way in a while.” The Trojans’ winning streak ended at 13, all the elements that were fraying at the edges in their previou...

Bob Dylan, Daniel Lanois on 'Time Out of Mind' Sessions

Image
In 1996, Bob Dylan met Daniel Lanois in a hotel room in New York. He wanted Lanois to listen to some lyrics that he'd put together and tell him if there was enough there for his first collection of original songs in more than half a decade. Dylan and Lanois had not much kept in touch since the contentious New Orleans sessions for Oh Mercy in 1989. That contention – and the results it produced – may have been part of what Dylan was looking for. The two were about to make an album that, Dylan would later tell Rolling Stone, "was me getting back in and fighting my way out of a corner." And he picked a sparring partner who'd helped him do it once before. What Lanois heard that day were songs that focused on what Dylan called "the dread realities of life." "They had a lot in them," Lanois says today. "They had regret and hope, beauty and optimism. A lot of life experience. They were so complex." There weren't yet ...

Strange Music, Inc Rittz Talks Origins of Mumble Rap, Authenticity, & 'Down For Mine'

Image
Hip-hop is a dynamic, ever changing force. As the art from grows and evolves, old trends and styles die, making way for new sounds, new voices, and new approaches. Evolution is necessary for survival, but despite the consistent change, a rare constant seems to be where these new sounds originate. The South….particularly Atlanta. The home of some of the most influential artists hip-hop (Outkast, Ludacris, T.I.), Atlanta’s new generation is again at the forefront of rap, but they are taking it in a different direction with what has been dubbed, “Mumble rap.” The subtly pejorative term is likely to send a shiver down the spine of those fans (and artists) who adhere to the teachings of the founding fathers of hip-hop, including the aforementioned Atlanta emcees as well as Strange Music’s own, Rittz. Even as a Gwinnett County native, surrounded by  triplet flows and trap beats, Rittz has stayed true to the fundamentals of hip-hop, but his Atlanta roots h...

People are missing the point on Trump’s NFL anthem-protest crusade

Image
In this 2016 photo, San Francisco 49ers Eric Reid (35) and Colin Kaepernick (7) kneel during the national anthem. (AP Photo/Marcio Jose Sanchez, File) President Trump has split the country over NFL protests during the national anthem; that seems to be the consensus takeaway from some new polls. A CNN survey, for instance, finds people think the players are doing the “wrong thing” by a 49-to-43 margin. But that kind of misses the point, for two reasons: Such protests are supposed to be unpopular. Trump appears to be going for something besides popularity — and he still might get it. On the first point, it’s not surprising that the protests would be somewhat unpopular. Protests like this are almost by definition unpopular, because they need to provoke to gain attention. Kneeling during the national anthem became a big deal when Colin Kaepernick first did it because of how unusual — and arguably out-of-bounds — it was. A poll...

Pavement May Reunite In 2019 @ARTISTdirect

Image
Fri, 29 Sep 2017 12:46:17 Back in March, former Pavement founding member Scott Kannberg dropped his first solo album, Doris and the Diggers , as Spiral Stairs. It featured a variety of who's who in the indie rock world, including Matt Berninger of The National, Kevin Drew and Justin Peroff of Broken Social Scene, Kelley Stoltz, and Adam Wade of Shudder To Think. He is currently on tour in Europe and took some time out to do an interview Italy's Radio Città del Capo. During the talk Kannberg was asked about his old band Pavement and the possibility of a reunion. He responded, "We haven't really discussed it, but there has been some talk about our 30th anniversary in 2019 [and] maybe doing some stuff. Stay tuned!" Pavement reunited back in 2010 and played a variety of concerts, but unlike many other bands stuck to it being a single tour with Stephen Malkmus explaining, "No, we're sticking to our guns and what we promised, even though it has been fun. ...

The Break Presents: Young Nudy

Image
Marko Visuals One of the hottest artists out of Atlanta is Young Nudy. The 24-year-old rapper caught people’s attention after being featured on 21 Savage’s song “Air It Out” in 2015—21 is actually Nudy’s cousin. Nudy built up a following after dropping his Slime Ball series mixtapes—the most recent being earlier this year—but things are really starting to take off for him after he released his latest project,  Nudy Land , two weeks ago. “I’m not even going to front. That shit surprised me,” he tells XXL of his new mixtape while in New York City. “I knew shit was going to do something but I didn’t know [ Nudy Land ] was going to do that. I really fuck with my fans I love them.” Back in April, producer Pi’erre Bourne told  XXL about Nudy’s potential and since then, the newcomer’s popularity has been on the rise. Despite the rapper’s recent climb up t...
