Niall Horan, Bully, & Jessie Ware Win In Top Albums Of The Week

The top albums released this week really span the gamut. From debuts by former boy band members to a new LP from a country superstar and the return of thrash metal gods, this week's new records hail from all over the musical map.
Niall Horan threw his hat into the ring as the newest former-One Direction member to release a solo album. Darius Rucker unveiled his sixth solo album, and is certainly hoping for another U.S. Country number one. Gwar, meanwhile, delivered their first album since the death of founding member Dave Brockie.
Elsewhere, Bully unveiled their sophomore album, which is sure to shoot them into the spotlight. And Jessie Ware delivered her third LP, which might be her finest and most personal yet. So without further ado, here are ARTISTdirect's top albums of the week:
Niall Horan — Flicker
Niall is the third former member of One Direction to release a solo album. Everyone knew Zayn and Harry Styles were set for massive solo careers as soon as the boy band finished their run, but now Horan throws his hat in the ring with Flicker, which is bound to find itself near the top of the album charts. It's friendly, relatable stuff, mostly akin to Ed Sheeran, for better or worse. Either way, it looks like Horan is set to do well for himself, as the album's first two singles, "This Town" and "Slow Hands", both reached top 20 lists in the U.S. and U.K.
Bully — Losing
We caught up with Bully lead singer Alicia Bognanno, where she gave some advice to women entering the music industry: "I think that one of the most discouraging things to me or that I have experienced and then didn't really realize till after the fact was how many times something had happened… This is totally a personal thing, but I think that it happens a lot to other women as well, and I know that in certain situations I've been told, like if we got some sort of success somewhere, or if we got a writeup somewhere, I've been told by numerous guys, in like three different situations that I can specifically recall, where they were like, "You got it 'cause so and so wants to f*** you." And I think that plants a seed in your head like you're not deserving of it, and it makes it hard for you to appreciate the work you do, and think that it's valid.
"So I would just say off the bat to anyone that if anyone ever talks to you like that or is even saying that, it's totally not true and they are just insecure [laughs] and they just are jealous and to move on because that's just not the case. But hearing that kind of stuff when you're starting out and you're 20 years old can stick with you for a long time, and can really wear on you. I would just say that, and then if anyone ever speaks to you in a condescending or manipulative tone to just call it out when you see it 'cause I think there are also situations like that that happen so quickly and you think back on it and you wish you could have said the right thing, and often times you can't because it's too late. But if there's ever a chance where someone is talking down to you or not respecting you, then that probably is the case, and that's not in your head, so just to speak up and tell them to f*** off and treat you with respect."
Jessie Ware — Glasshouse
Jessie Ware has finally released her third studio album, Glasshouse, which she wrote while pregnant. She worked with a number of writers and producers on the album, including Julia Michaels, Francis and the Lights, Cashmere Cat, Benny Blanco, and Ed Sheeran. She said about the album, "I've written with a lot of different people, but I think what's bringing it all together is my voice, and the storytelling. It's quite a personal record, which I didn't realize [when writing it]. I thought I was just writing songs, but it's become this record that's for my husband and my baby. It's been a wild couple of years, and I feel like this album represents those ups and downs, the fear, the beauty, and the celebrations."
Darius Rucker — When Was The Last Time
When Was The Last Time is the sixth solo studio album from former Hootie & the Blowfish singer and guitarist Darius Rucker. All four of his last studio albums have peaked within the top 10 of the Billboard 200 and earned number one rankings on the U.S. Country chart. There seems little reason to believe that anything will be different this time around. Though there is perhaps a bit more of a pop direction on this record, that should only serve the singer-songwriter well as he looks to once again top the charts.
GWAR — The Blood Of Gods
Over the past four decades, Gwar has continued to amaze and horrify audiences. The Blood Of Gods is their first album without founding member Dave Brockie, who portrayed Oderus Urungus and passed away from a heroin overdose in 2014. On this, their 14th studio album, fans can expect more of what they've come to love. The LP's description reads:
"The Blood of Gods, is nothing less than a sacred text chronicling the rise of humanity against their makers, and the massive battle between Gwar and the forces of all that is uptight and wrong with the world. Along the way, the band challenges the sins of their great mistake, from politics, pollution, and organized religion, to fast food, and factory farming. Humans are shown as what they are; a parasitical disease that must be eradicated before they suck the planet dry.
Of course, The Blood of Gods is the first Gwar album without the band's fallen leader, Oderus Urungus. The title of the album refers to the loss of Oderus and the struggles and triumphs that produced the new sound of the band. Born of adversity, The Blood of Gods is a sonic scar... a question asked and answered... Death cannot kill Gwar. Nothing can."
