Jethro Tull Talks "String Quartets" @ARTISTdirect

Image
> Home > News > Jethro Tull Talks "String Quartets" Fri, 31 Mar 2017 08:23:19 Ian Anderson is a man who does not rest. It's been fifty years since his band, Jethro Tull's, inception and the man doesn't seem to ever stop. With early iconic tracks like "Aqualung" and "Living in the Past", Anderson secured himself as a writer of innovative songs, with music that shook genres together. His blend of rock, folk and sometimes jazz secured a fanbase that was as diverse and far-reaching as his music. He has performed music to countless people through the years, from beginning at the legendary Marquee club in London to passing through the Andes and ancient Greek and Roman amphitheaters. There seems like no challenge that Anderson will not undertake. Now, along with John O'Hara, Anderson has recorded Jethro Tull - The String Quartets , an album that takes classic Jethro Tull songs and reworks them for Classical performance by the Cardu...

Mississippi State shocks UConn, ending Huskies' record 111-game win streak as Bulldogs advance to title game

Do you believe in miracles? Don’t laugh — this might have been the greatest upset of them all. I’m still in shock right now, but I wanted to take the shot — I wanted to take the shot — so I took the shot and I made it.” The Huskies’ record 111-game winning streak is officially over, and the defeat could not have come at a worse time, as their loss in the national semifinals drops them to 36-1 and ends their reign of four straight national titles. ...

Triple Albums: The History of an Elusive Rock Format

Image
Triplicate , Bob Dylan's latest ramble into the wilds of American popular song, continues in the stylistic vein of its predecessors, Shadows in the Night and Fallen Angels . But in the literal sense, it also extends an even weightier tradition. Comprised of three CDs, Triplicate is that rarity in pop, the triple-record set. Once dismissed as one of rock's most bloated, needlessly over-the-top formats, Triplicate is the latest example of the way in which the three-disc package simply refuses to die. Despite all attempts to snuff it out, it's become a perversely durable format, taking on a new context every time it's revived. Seemingly, the first three-LP sets plopped onto the scene in 1970 with the release of the first Woodstock soundtrack and George Harrison's All Things Must Pass . Both were period-piece gems, and both were only extended to that length thanks to a surplus of material. The Woodstock set had to condense three days of music into one package, ...

LeBron James passes Shaquille O'Neal for 7th on all-time NBA scoring list

LeBron James is already established as one of the greatest players in NBA history, but his place in the record books is not yet close to confirmed. At just 32 years old, the Cleveland Cavaliers icon has the chance to pile up stats and near the top of the leaderboards in nearly every major statistical category. As he does so, he will pass many of the sport’s most prominent legends and reaffirm his place in history. [Sign up for Yahoo Fantasy Baseball: Get in the game and join a league today] LeBron accomplished one of those feats on Thursday night against the Chicago Bulls at the United Center. With 4:28 remaining in the fourth. quarter, James went to the line for three free throws and made the first (and then missed the next two) to score his 28,597th career point and pass Shaquille O’Neal for seventh on the NBA’s all-time scoring list. LeBron came into Thursday needing 23 points to tie Shaq and scored 19 in the first half to help the Cavs to a 50-41 lead at the b...

Free Music Download Gracie And Rachel "Tiptoe EP" @ARTISTdirect

Image
Thu, 30 Mar 2017 10:18:13 This week's free music download comes from Gracie and Rachel, in the form of their Tiptoe EP, a four-track collection that's offered as a sign of thanks from the duo as they prepare to release their debut self-titled album in April. The album, which you can pre-order via Pledgemusic, has been generating quite a buzz amongst folk fans and initiated audiences who have followed the artists as they've built a reputation for live shows and shrewd songwriting. Comparisons to bands like The Staves have already been made. It's a blessing and a curse to be regarded in such high esteem as a band who have been championed by Bon Iver. But as Justin Vernon seems to do all he can to install a sense of folk-based purity back into the broader pop-listening consciousness, so the likes of The Staves and Gracie and Rachel will hopefully gain. What the Staves accomplish with three voices, Gracie and Rachel accomplish with their two part harmonies and an app...

Mandy Moore & Justin Timberlake Couldn't Be More '90s in This #TBT Photo

Image
"Summer of 1999. Abercrombie tshirts and bucket hats." In 2017, Mandy Moore is a TV mom on NBC's most-watched show. But in the summer of 1999, Mandy Moore was the kid-sister pop-star alternative to Britney and Christina, armed with her breakout hit "Candy" and an opening gig on *NSYNC's summer tour. Looking back at her pop-star past, Moore took to Instagram on Thursday (March 30) to share the ultimate Throwback Thursday pic -- a photo that perfectly summarizes a certain point in time. "Summer of 1999. Abercrombie tshirts and bucket hats. Opening for this guy and his band. Look at my nervous smile! #tbt #memories," she captioned the picture of her 15-year-old self with ultimate late-'90s heartthrob Justin Timberlake. Take a look: That same year, Moore also toured with the Backstreet Boys, making sure to cover all her boy-band bases. Since her 1999 debut album So Real , Moore has released another five albums, but she's best known now as...

With Kevin Durant's Injury, Warriors Reminded of Andre Iguodala's Real Value

Image
Jamie Squire/Getty Images Erik Malinowski Golden State Warriors Lead Writer March 31, 2017 With every drive and kick-out for a corner three, with every outlet pass that leads to a layup, with every high-arching buzzer-beater that swishes through nylon, Andre Iguodala  makes the Golden State Warriors  offseason all the more interesting. Despite Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant both facing the prospect of free agency, the idea that both will remain with the Warriors is a near certainty. With Iguodala, the circumstances are far more complicated, but his value to the Warriors has never been higher. Since Durant went down with a sprained MCL a month ago, Iguodala has delivered more minutes and higher offensive efficiency across the board, and his defense alone makes him a top-20 player in the NBA over the past month.  Against the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday, as Golden State went down by 22 points in the first quarter, it was Iguodala's presence that, in the words of...

Watch Illustrator Victor Juhasz Draw President Donald Trump

Image
Rolling Stone illustrator Victor Juhasz, explains how a single line from Matt Taibbi's cover story on President Donald Trump became the concept for the cover. "A cover has to grab you, has to be a simple image," Juhasz says in the new mini-documentary.  Taibbi on Trump the Destroyer Trump has stuffed his Cabinet with tyrants, zealots and imbeciles – all bent on demolishing our government from within In the story, Taibbi describes Trump's leadership style as "chaos ... hurricanes of misdirection, ignored rules and dared the system of checks and balances to stop him." That image crystalized the concept for Juhasz. He began to sketching out what the metaphor of Trump as a hurricane might look like in quick, imperfect circles in Rolling Stone 's Midtown Manhattan office. Juhasz says he works like a jazz musician, riffing on concept 10, 20 times before he's satisfied. The other part of that process is doing the job of devil's advocate in or...

James Harden's Rockets just broke the Warriors' record for most 3s in a season

Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey has always constructed his teams with the knowledge that the three-pointer holds mathematical supremacy over twos, and the 2016-17 version of the Rockets is his masterpiece. With first-year head coach Mike D’Antoni promoting a faster pace and newcomers like Eric Gordon and Ryan Anderson next to holdovers such as James Harden, the Rockets have pushed the three-pointer past its historical limits and into a new era. Most NBA teams now understand why it’s useful to structure an offense around the perimeter, but only the Rockets take it to these extremes. [Sign up for Yahoo Fantasy Baseball: Get in the game and join a league today] So it’s not totally surprising that the Rockets are rewriting the record books when it comes to team three-pointers. They set a new record for three-pointers made (24, later matched by the Denver Nuggets) and attempted (61) back in mid-December and already had attempted 300 more threes than the previous...
